The President of the URE announces the schedule of cogeneration premium auctions for 2026

According to the schedule announced by the President of the URE, five CHP auctions will be held in 2026, with the first planned for February and the last for December next year.

The announcement of the auction schedule is not equivalent to the announcement of an auction. Each planned auction will be announced no later than 45 days before it begins.

The auction-based support system for sources generating electricity and heat in a single technological process is intended for new and significantly modernised cogeneration units with an installed electrical capacity of no less than 1 MW and less than 50 MW.

The formal announcement of a CHP auction by the President of the URE will be published, among others, in the Public Information Bulletin of the URE. The announcement will specify the exact date of the auction and the maximum energy volume and value of electricity whose sale may be supported in the form of a cogeneration premium.

Detailed information on cogeneration premium auctions, including the auction rules and bid forms, is available on the URE website.

  • Cogeneration (combined heat and power generation) consists in producing electricity and heat in a single technological process. The advantage of this technology is the significantly higher utilisation of the primary energy contained in the fuel. The efficiency of a generating source operating in cogeneration may exceed even 80 per cent, while in the process of generating electricity in a power plant it is difficult to reach the level of 50 per cent.
  • The Polish Act on Promoting Electricity from High-Efficiency Cogeneration introduced in 2019 a new support system for cogeneration sources, granted in one of four forms depending on the generator group for which it is intended: a) individual guaranteed premium; b) guaranteed premium; c) auction; d) call for applications. This system replaced the previous support mechanism based on the formula of cogeneration origin certificates.

In 2025, three cogeneration premium auctions have already taken place: the first between 24 and 26 March, the second between 10 and 12 June and the third between 22 and 24 September. The last one is planned for 15, 16 and 17 December.
