Hydrogen market: GAZ-SYSTEM becomes a hydrogen transmission system operator in Poland

On 17 June 2025, GAZ-SYSTEM, which is the only gas transmission system operator in Poland appointed by the President of the URE, applied to this Energy Market Regulator for:

  • Certification of Independent Operation[1] pursuant to Article 9h1(2)(1b) of the Energy Law;
  • a derogation of the mandatory retention of the legal entity commercial operations independent from its fuel gas transmission business[2].

Pursuant to Article 11 of the Energy Law[3], until 4 August 2026, the gas transmission system operator appointed under the existing legislation is the hydrogen transmission system operator[4], subject to the submission of the requests for what is specified above[5].

This means that on the date of submitting the requests, GAZ-SYSTEM became a hydrogen transmission system operator on the territory of Poland and will remain in this capacity by 4 August 2026.

The continued capacity of GAZ-SYSTEM as a hydrogen transmission system operator past 4 August 2026 will require re-issue of the Certification of Independent Operation by the President of the URE and GAZ-SYSTEM requesting its appointment for such capacity for another term.
